The 04 Series is a single pendant, repeated with intent. Add a module and the room changes shape. Nothing else about it changes at all.
On light · 01
A room does not need more light. It needs light in the right places, at the right height, with somewhere for the eye to rest. Most fixtures are sold on output. We have never met anyone who came home and wished their ceiling were louder.
So the 04 Series starts from the other end. One shade, sized to the span of two hands. One stem, in three lengths. One canopy that grows only as far as the number of shades requires. Everything is a multiple of something you already have.
The shade is blown by hand in our own furnace, which means no two are identical and all of them are the same. Opal glass diffuses without scattering. It carries a little of the light sideways into the room, so the pool on the table is soft at the edge rather than cut.
Light is a material. We would rather you noticed the room than the fixture.

The 04 comes apart in the order it went together. Every component is separately replaceable and separately serviceable, which is another way of saying we expect the fixture to outlive the room it was bought for.
The stem carries the load through a machined collar. The glass carries nothing but light.
Part numbers are stamped, not printed. Order any of the seven on its own for twenty years from the date on your card.

Hand blown · acid etched · 4 mm wall · 1 140 °C
Two gathers of glass, the second one white, so the wall thickness varies the way a hand varies. Light entering the inner surface is scattered by the opal layer before it leaves, which is why the shade looks lit rather than transparent. Etching the outside removes the reflection that would otherwise put a small bright window in your eye from across the room.

Spun CuZn37 · hand grained · unlacquered
Bare on purpose. It will move from yellow to bronze over about eighteen months and then hold, and the marks your hands leave in the first week become part of the record. If you want it bright, a cloth and a little acid is all it takes. Most people stop bothering in the second year, which we choose to read as a compliment.

Cataphoretic primer · textured powder · 200 °C cure
A grey that reads almost black in daylight and disappears entirely after dark, leaving only the ring of light at the rim. The tooth of the coat is coarse enough to kill the specular highlight and fine enough that you cannot see it from a metre away. This is the finish we specify for rooms that already have plenty going on.

Quartersawn · air dried 4 months · hardwax oil
Cut on the quarter so the medullary rays read as fleck rather than stripe. Turned slightly oversize while green, left on the shelf for four months, then finished by hand. Wood moves. We would rather it did its moving in our workshop than above your table.

A fixture should be designed twice. Once for the room in daylight, when it is a piece of furniture hanging in the air. Once for the room at night, when it is the only thing in it that matters.

I spent four years designing ceiling lights that were trying to be sculptures. They photographed beautifully. Then I moved into a flat with a low ceiling and a long table, and discovered that I did not want a sculpture over dinner. I wanted somewhere to put the light.
The 04 is what came out of that. It is deliberately unfinished as an idea. One shade, one stem, one canopy, and the decision about how much of it you need left to you and to the room. I have seen it hung as a single pendant over a reading chair, and as five over a twelve seat table in a converted chapel, and both times it looked as though it had been designed for that job. That is the only compliment I am after.
If you take one thing from this page, take the stagger. The shades do not hang level. They never have, and every request to make them level has been politely declined.

A furnace, four benches and a spray booth in a former cotton mill. Eleven people. Around nine hundred fixtures a year, which is roughly what eleven people can make properly.
